This methodological work summarizes and evaluates the procedures developed in an attempt to take advantage, for a historical study on coffee technology, of the information available at the farm level for the mid-1950s, when the modernization of this crop was just beginning. The original data, on ballots for each farm, were compiled for the 1955 agricultural census, and microfilms are preserved in the National Archive. This is the only information of this type that has been possible to locate so far, and is part of a collection of microfilms sent several years ago by the General Directorate of Statistics and Censuses to said repository of historical documentation. Our purpose, in entering and processing the 1955 data for various coffee-growing areas, has been to preliminarily approach an analysis of the combinations of soil water and the degrees of modernization in different types of productive units, at a temporary moment in time. when substantial technological innovations began to spread in agriculture, not only coffee but also other crops. Indirectly, we wanted it to allow us to contribute elements for a historical approach to the issues of agricultural production on farms that produce coffee, differentiating them according to geographical location, size and degree of specialization. The existence of information at the farm level and its introduction to a database offered the opportunity to carry out analyzes that cannot be carried out with the official published statistics. On the other hand, the nature of the data collected in the census ballots severely limits the possibility of reconstructing
