La participación evangélica en la política costarricense: El caso pentecostal y neopentecostal 1980-2018

Abstract

Esta tesis analiza la participación política evangélica en Costa Rica en el periodo 1980-2018, profundizando en el caso pentecostal y neopentecostal. Para ello, fue necesario realizar una periodización diferenciada, que permitiera comprender desde la perspectiva histórica tres elementos puntuales: a. el proceso de inserción y evolución de los movimientos evangélicos en Costa Rica desde el siglo XIX hasta el periodo de estudio, b. las transformaciones en las Constituciones Políticas en el tema de la libertad de culto en el país, como muestra del crecimiento número del evangelismo costarricense y c. las disputas entre la Iglesia Católica y el Movimiento Evangélico, durante la primera mitad del siglo XX, como respuesta al cambio religioso del periodo. El objeto de estudio de esta investigación, es decir, la participación política evangélica en Costa Rica se inscribe en un periodo de transformaciones sociales y políticas en América Latina y en un contexto de evolución teológica de los movimientos evangélicos de la región, particularmente del movimiento pentecostal y su derivación neopentecostal. En ese sentido, el caso costarricense no debe analizarse como un caso aislado, sino que forma parte de un corpus regional que incidirá en los últimos años en distintos países de América Latina. De esa manera, se estudia el proceso de consolidación y evolución de agrupaciones políticas evangélicas costarricenses en el marco de un contexto político en constante dinamización, caracterizado inicialmente por la presencia del bipartidismo nacional y tras su ruptura, la presencia de un sistema pluripartidista, que ha facilitado la inserción de estas agrupaciones políticas-religiosas o religioso-políticas en la política nacional. Para comprender ese nuevo proceso, se parte de tres factores de inserción y cuatro nociones que le complementan, tomados de teóricos que han estudiado el fenómeno a nivel latinoamericano: José Luis Pérez Guadalupe y Jean-Pierre Bastian y su participación se caracteriza en tres modelos o tipos de participación política: partido político, frente evangélico y facción evangélica, categorías tomadas de Pérez Guadalupe. Lo anterior, permite analizar y establecer el proceso histórico-político de los movimientos evangélicos en Costa Rica, en el caso particular del movimiento pentecostal y neopentecostal como objeto de estudio de esta investigación. Lo cual permite no sólo conocer las transformaciones políticas de Costa Rica en el periodo 1980-2018, sino que también refleja el cambio religioso en el país a nivel histórico.

This thesis analyzes the evangelical political participation in Costa Rica in the period 1980-to 2018, deepening in the Pentecostal and Neopentecostal case. For this, it was necessary to carry out a differentiated periodization, which allowed us to understand from the historical perspective three specific elements: a. the process of insertion and evolution of the evangelical movements in Costa Rica from the nineteenth century to the period of study, b. the transformations in the Political Constitutions on the issue of freedom of worship in the country, as a sign of the growing number of Costa Rican evangelism and c. the disputes between the Catholic Church and the Evangelical Movement, during the first half of the twentieth century, as a response to the religious change of the period. The object of study of this research, that is, evangelical political participation in Costa Rica is part of a period of social and political transformations in Latin America and a context of theological evolution of evangelical movements in the region, particularly the Pentecostal movement and its neo-Pentecostal derivation. In this sense, the Costa Rican case should not be analyzed as an isolated case but is part of a regional corpus that will have an impact in recent years in different Latin American countries. That way, we studied the process of consolidation and evolution of political groupings evangelical Costa Ricans in the framework of a political context in constant animation, characterized initially by the presence of the bi-national, and following its rupture, the presence of a multi-party system, which has facilitated the insertion of this political groups-religious, or religion-political in national politics. To understand this new process, we start from three insertion factors and four notions that complement it, taken from theorists who have studied the phenomenon in Latin America: José Luis Pérez Guadalupe and Jean-Pierre Bastian, and their participation is characterized in three different models or types of political participation: political party, front and evangelical faction of the gospel, categories taken from Pérez Guadalupe. The above, allows us to analyze and establish the historical-political process of the evangelical movements in Costa Rica, in the case of the Pentecostal and Neopentecostal movement as the object of study of this research. This allows us not only to know the political transformations of Costa Rica in the period 1980-to 2018, but also reflects the religious change in the country at a historical level.
