Encontrando mi espacio: desplazamiento y vivencias de las mujeres de los sectores urbano-populares de San José, Costa Rica (1950-1980)

Abstract

El trabajo analiza la movilización femenina desde una perspectiva histórica, para ello, se contextualiza el tema con los principales acontecimientos de Costa Rica y los orígenes de los barrios del Sur de San José. Se discuten las vivencias de las mujeres de este sector, en función de los cambios políticos, económicos y del uso que le dieron al espacio público o a las comunidades. Para efectos de este estudio, el análisis de la socialización y movilización de las mujeres, a partir de la categoría de género, develó que las actividades femeninas no siempre estuvieron en función de los valores patriarcales. La socialización pasó por varias fases. En primer lugar está la del hogar, donde a las mujeres de este estudio se les enseñaba a obedecer a un patriarca, el papá o esposo y donde la mamá ocupaba ese papel de maestra de los quehaceres domésticos. En segundo lugar, está la comunidad, que dirigía con normas aceptadas por sus habitantes la forma en la que debían relacionarse mujeres y hombres: desde los juegos hasta las salidas o visitas al hogar. Y por último, la manera en que ellas y ellos interiorizaban y cambiaban esas normas. La participación en el espacio público o privado estuvo muy demarcada. En la calle, ellas se apropiaron de los lugares que necesitaron, y en el privado, procuraron no contradecir las órdenes de sus maridos. De esta manera, crearon las rupturas que les permitió convivir, socializar y encontrar su espacio más allá de las puertas de los hogares.

The work analyzes female mobilization from a historical perspective, for this, the issue is contextualized with the main events in Costa Rica and the origins of the southern neighborhoods of San José. The experiences of women in this sector are discussed, based on political and economic changes and the use they gave to public space or communities. For the purposes of this study, the analysis of the socialization and mobilization of women, based on the gender category, revealed that female activities were not always based on patriarchal values. Socialization went through several phases. In the first place there is that of the home, where the women in this study were taught to obey a patriarch, the father or husband, and where the mother occupied the role of teacher of household chores. Secondly, there is the community, which governed with norms accepted by its inhabitants the way in which women and men had to relate: from games to outings or visits to the home. And finally, the way they internalized and changed those norms. Participation in the public or private space was highly demarcated. In the street, they appropriated the places they needed, and in private, they tried not to contradict the orders of their husbands. In this way, they created the ruptures that allowed them to live together, socialize and find their space beyond the doors of their homes.
