An annotated record is presented about the treatment of phonetics and phonology in textbooks for teaching Spanish as L2 and as LE, used in different study centers in Costa Rica and other countries around the world. The present research aims to present an overview of the treatment given to phonetics and phonology in textbooks for teaching Spanish as a foreign language (LE) or as a second language (L2), published during the last twenty years and used in United States, Spain, Costa Rica and other countries. For this we will review 20 manuals (8 at the time of delivering the presentation), chosen randomly and that have been used in schools, universities and institutes, especially in the United States and Spain -countries where they were published-, but also in Costa Rica and from other countries. It is necessary to clarify that the term textbook is used as a manual that facilitates the acquisition of oral and written skills, not only pronunciation. This distinction is made because, in most of these study centers, specialized courses (in which students must take courses in literature, phonetics, composition and others) are different from those offered at initial levels and whose interest it is primarily to facilitate communication.es_ES
