dc.description.abstract | This graduation paper consists on the translation of an Anthropology academic text
written by Marco Guevara Berger2
and the resulting translation report, which is based on the
research of the adaptation of the hedges to the academic discourse in English. To do so, Reiss
and Vermeer theory in regard to the function of the original text as well as the theory of
metadiscourse by Ken Hyland and the taxonomy of hedges proposed by Sonia Oliver del
Olmo are taken into consideration. Based on the skopos of the target text and the above
theories, English academic conventions related to genre, text type and style are identified.
Once the target text conventions are identified, the adaptative strategy is determined to
translate hedges into English by using literal translation, oblique translation, addition and
omission. The results show the inexistence of a translation technique that applies to all kind of
hedges, but it is clear the need for a pragmatic analysis of the source text and the contrast of
the conventions of both languages. In this way, the differences and similarities between the
languages involved in this research were respected. Research about the adaptation of the
hedges in different disciplines is still limited. | es_ES |
