This book is part of the integrated project, Social Responsibility: Economic, Social and Environmental Impacts for the internationalization of MSMEs in Costa Rica, which in turn is developed within the Trade, Technology Innovation (CTI) Program, attached to the School of International Relations. The integrated project on corporate social responsibility involves production, research, teaching and extension and constitutes one more step in the construction of an initiative aimed at sensitizing the academic and business community about social responsibility. In recent decades, corporate social responsibility understood as “a way of doing business that takes into account the social, environmental and economic effects of business action, integrating into it respect for ethical values, people, communities and the environment ”has become more important worldwide and the Central American region is no exception, mainly because of the awareness that companies have developed about the importance of ensuring the well-being of the different stakeholders with whom they interact. These stakeholders, or interest groups, are those who are positively or negatively impacted by the actions or decisions of a company, for example: workers, customers, partners or shareholders, suppliers, community and environment. This business strategy seeks to implement measures that are primarily of interest to society and not only to the company; that is, it is one that “encompasses (…) business decisions that are adopted for reasons that at first glance are beyond the economic and technical interests of the company” (Nieto et al., 2004, 28, cited by Bañón- Gómis, Guillén-Parra and Ramos-López, 2011, 39). Corporate social responsibility incorporates ethics and, therefore, it can be understood as “a moral commitment of the company in the construction of a better society” (Argandoña and Fontrodona, 2011, 18). Given this commitment, the company must create mechanisms and criteria that collaborate with the objective of benefiting society, both in the short and long term. This practice of voluntary integration, by companies, on social and environmental concerns in their business operations and their relationships with their interlocutors is not a fad that will disappear over time, it is a need that will continue to spread. and that day by day it will be more used in the business world. To carry out this work, a documentary research methodology was developed in the first instance to collect, systematize and document qualitative information on social responsibility from the business perspective, the state of the art of social responsibility, some management tools, and the main initiatives promoting social responsibility in Costa Rica. It is because of the above that the book aims to contribute to the discussion and reflection of corporate social responsibility in Costa Rica. The book includes four chapters, the first one refers to the management of CSR, addresses the actions of the company, the execution of CSR, the implementation of CSR, this being a debate in process and from there it analyzes the complex approach to CSR, the classification of actions in CSR and proposes some ideas about the route towards a relevant classification of CSR actions, the role of the company in society and finally analyzes the perspective of CSR. For its part, the second chapter The Current State of CSR in Costa Rica addresses social responsibility as a practice for doing business. The third chapter contemplates the management tools for the measurement and evaluation of corporate social responsibility, this proposes measuring to improve, and addresses the management model of corporate social responsibility, defining ends and means, the importance of measurement and evaluation in the strategic management of social responsibility and analyzes the instruments to implement corporate social responsibility, from the instruments of indicators to measure social responsibility, declarative principles and codes of conduct, guidelines for social certification standards, information guides and balance sheets and position and classification indices for investment funds, as well as the Indicators and indices to measure social responsibility in Central America. Finally, the fourth chapter considers the entities that promote social responsibility in Costa Rica, including the Business Association for Development (AED), the National Consultative Council for Social Responsibility (CCNRS), ALIARSE and CEGESTI.
