Can e-commerce provide a solution to the coffee paradox?: The case of Costa Rica(IFIP Advances in Information and Communication Technology, 2016-09-12) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, Ariella; Mata-Marín, GabrielaIn spite of the boom in coffee consumption worldwide, farmers in coffee-producing countries are subject to increasingly lower prices. This situation is referred to as the “coffee paradox”, and affects the livelihood of millions of coffee farmers and their associated workers. ICT may provide a way to address this problem by eliminating intermediaries in the global value chain for coffee; therefore, we study the effect of e-commerce systems used in Costa Rica for trading coffee on prices received by local actors and discuss whether these systems provide a solution to the coffee paradox. Based on this discussion, we propose a new e-commerce system.Ítem CRGOURMETCOFFEE.COM: using E-Commerce to mitigate the coffee paradox in Costa Rica(International Association for Development of the Information Society, 2019) Mata, Francisco; Hernández Ruiz, IreneWe present the background and the design and development considerations for an electronic platform to sell Costa Rican roasted coffee through e-commerce, referred to as crgourmetcoffee.com (https://www.crgourmetcoffee.com). This system is proposed as a solution to mitigate the coffee paradox −phenomenon that makes the coffee prices received by famers in developing countries to be increasingly lower, despite a growing demand for this product. In this regard, crgourmetcoffee.com is aimed at enabling Costa Rican coffee farmers to sell directly its coffee to final consumers in developed countries, eliminating intermediaries in an effort to allow producers to obtain higher price margins.Ítem Curso: Recursos didácticos para el aprendizaje una experiencia en la virtualidad. Eje temático: Calidad y Materiales educativos y Herramientas Tecnológicas en Educación a Distancia(Fundación Latinoamericana para la Educación a Distancia, 2008) Vílchez Quesada, Enrique; Ulate Solís, GabyAbstract: Virtual learning in recent years is representing an important educational approach with its own particularities, both in the role of the participating agents and in the learning environment. Virtuality has been incorporated into the scenarios of educational institutions as a response to the demands and needs of the new generations, which require the formation of a series of skills to function in a globalized society in terms of information and the media. . At the National University (UNA) of Costa Rica, these processes of permanent change have led to the consolidation of a Program called "UNA Virtual", whose main objective has been to spread the use and train university teachers in the use of technologies. for training via the Internet. Given these initiatives, a unique experience was carried out with this research project in the Educology Division of the UNA, designing and implementing a degree course called "Teaching Resources for Learning", which due to its curricular characteristics was ideal. to study virtuality in a face-to-face context. In addition to this, the experience has made it possible to give continuity to the process in projection to the year 2008, institutionalizing the course in the nine careers for which it is taught. With this article, the main results obtained in three dimensions are published: the virtuality in presence in the particular context of the Educology Division of the National University of Costa Rica, conjectures of the beliefs of teachers and students regarding the advantages and disadvantages of a virtual educational model and evaluation of the activities, materials and structure of the Didactic Resources for Learning course under a bimodal approach.Ítem E-marketing in Costa Rican export companies: Results from a field survey(IEEE EXPLORE, 2012-06-25) Mata, Francisco; Quesada, AriellaWe present the results of a field survey aimed at analyzing ICT adoption and use, particularly related to e-marketing, in Costa Rican export companies. The e-commerce readiness/intensity/impact model, developed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), was adapted for this field survey. The results obtained show that, in general, the surveyed companies present low e-marketing readiness and intensity, with the exception of service companies and microenterprises. Furthermore, there is no evidence of a clear perceived positive ICT impact on the exports taking into account all companies, neither considering their sector or size. Nevertheless, large companies perceive a positive effect, which is consistent with a sustained increase in their export value. Based on the previous results, we discuss factors that might influence the use of e-marketing and present recommendations to increase its use in Costa Rican export companies.
