Creating autonomous learning environments in an online learning experience

To become increasingly self-directing and autonomous learners, adults must be able to take responsibility for their lives. In the context of higher education, one of the most important goals is to educate by creating conditions for learners to become active subjects of their learning and lifelong learners. However, previous studies have shown that students do not perceive themselves as autonomous as they progress through university. This study aims to describe and understand the experience of creating environments conducive to autonomous learning in an online learning experience. This hermeneutical phenomenological study reports the online learning experience of a group of undergraduate students and their professor (being the researcher) in creating environments that facilitate autonomous learning. The methodology used follows the sixstep model proposed by Peoples (2020) for phenomenological research. The findings report the generation of six themes around which the experience lived by the participants is described and interpreted. The experience motivated the participants to organize their learning process in a context where the relationship between teacher and student allowed for growing autonomy.
