| es_ES |
dc.description.abstract | The main purpose of this investigation was to find an accessible and useful method for any
veterinarian to perform a correct diagnosis of the gallbladder abnormal motility.
In Costa Rica and other countries around the world, it is not common to evaluate the
gallbladder emptying when a possible total or partial obstruction is suspected.
We evaluated the gallbladder emptying in 34 healthy adult dogs. We estimated the
gallbladder volume of the fasted dogs at the 5, 15, 30, 45, 60 and 120 postprandial minutes. We
fed the animals with a portion of canned food with high levels of fat and proteins (a/d, Hill´s,
Science Diet®) to stimulate the gallbladder contraction. In order to calculate the gallbladder
volume, we measured the gallbladder dimensions by ultrasonography. We used this data to
apply the “Dodds” formula (Dodds et al., 1985).
We obtained a mean fasting volume of 7,88 ml and a mean volume of 6,93 ml; 6,66 ml;
5,89 ml; 5,84 ml; 5,19 ml and 4,11 ml; at the 5th, 15th, 30th, 45th, 60th and 120th minute.
Maximum gallbladder emptying was 47,85% and it happened at the 120th minute. The
gallbladder emptying at the 60th
and the 120th minute was statistically significant (p<0,05).
The procedure to evaluate the gallbladder motility was a method not only effective, but also
useful and economic compared to the intravenous administration of synthetic cholecystokinin.
Besides, it is helpful to provide a prognosis in an easy way in our country and follow up the
patient’s evolution under any affection that directly affects the biliar ejection. | |
